Description

Show the skills learned this year in Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator. Put a portfolio together to show prospective employers.

Process

  1. I went through and edited my designs and then chose a background. I learned about spreads and put the information in its place.
  2. I made master spreads and edited the typography. Added my content on the left side and the designs on the right. I tried my best to follow good design rules.

Project Revisions

Brochure: I made the font smaller on the back page and put more space between the words and the earth in the middle. I changed the color of the feet to be a similar shade to the green of the main background. 45 minutes.

Webpage Mockup: I liked it how it was. I didn’t change anything.

HTML & CCS Coding Project: I tried to figure out how to change the indents but  I wasn’t able to figure it out. 20 minutes worth of trying.

Infographic: I got rid of the hyphens and centered the statistics in the middle part. 15 minutes.

Business Identity: I recreated the business cards but didn’t change the logo size. Tried to not have an oval shape. 15 minutes

Montage Project: I removed the stroke from the words and lowered the title. 15 minutes

PhotoShop: Design: I couldn’t retake the image so I didn’t do anything with this.

Magazine Cover: I removed the stroke from the letters and I lined up the bar code with the words.

DESCRIPTION
Design a brochure for a company using all the skills and tools that  I have learned this semester.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1.I chose to use a fictional company that I created about the earth and enjoying nature. I have a lot of images on my computer that make me happy and I wanted to use them in this project.
2. I created the logo of the earth with the feet in it in Illustrator  as well as the feet images themselves and added to my Indesign document.

3. I edited my images in Photoshop and added them to my Indesign document. Next I added my body copy where I wanted it.
4. I then did the final touches of feathering and lightening images. Have the text wrap the earth image as well as make the changes that were suggested by the critique.
5. Then I printed it at Office Depot and trimmed it and scored it with a razor blade so that I folded nicely and a small part could be removed.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I had a fellow classmate Tatyana Chetina review my brochure and she recommended that I lighten the footprints or change the background. So I changed the background to all be the same and I darkened the footprints so they were seen better. The instructor recommended that I have a picture of the earth rather than a vector image. I did that and he also recommended that the words on the back be higher in the blue part of my image so that they were readable instead of being lost in the trees.

MESSAGE
Encourage people to get out and enjoy the beauty of the world around us.

AUDIENCE
Everyone, but especially those glued to technology.

TOP THING LEARNED
Razor blades make a nice fold and we have some amazing tools to create nice design pieces and they can all work together to create a final project.

DESCRIPTION
Design a website homepage using a grid.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1.I chose to use my piano studio and logo that I created as the basis for this project.
2. I started sketching 3 different ideas of how I wanted to lay it out. I wanted this navigation to be easy and a large image with some smaller ones.

3. After I sketched it on paper, I then jumped into Photoshop and opened the 16-column grid. I started to create my wireframe to get me started.
4. After my wireframe, I started to add the actual content.I changed just a few things once  I got the content in. Things I thought looked better.
5. Below are the sketches and the wireframe.

HTML & CSS Coding Project

screen-shot-2017-03-01-at-21-38-05-fullpageDESCRIPTION
Code a custom webpage with HTML and CSS.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1. First I created my logo in Illustrator. I teach piano lessons out of my home and want to begin to brand my services.
2. I resized my logo to be 300 px on the long side.
3. I created my HTML file and started adding my content and tags.
4. Then I created my CSS file and made sure to link it in the HTML code.
5. I made the CSS to match the colors in my logo using Photoshop and the eye-drop tool. and changed the fonts to what I wanted
6. I moved the paragraphs and headings to be more visually appealing. They were originally too close to the edge. Also I added more padding around the heading.
7. I then made sure to validate my HTML and CSS and took a screen shot.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
Was not required for this project. I did have some comments about a question regarding the full name of the CSS and image file in my html that I posted on Facebook.

Business Identity

DESCRIPTION
Create a logo for my piano teaching business and establish a visual identity across documents

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
1. I first determined the company I wanted to design for and then thought of everything that went with piano lessons. I came up with piano keys, treble clef, and music notes.
2. Then I created the designs with Illustrator. I used the anchor tool to draw the piano keys and the treble clef. The music note was a font that I have on my computer.
3.I made three different logos and had people vote for the one that they liked the best. I got a bunch of mixed reviews. I had 10 responses from my family members and each had a different opinion (they all have individual strong opinions). I also had 5 responses from classmates again with mixed opinions.
4. I really couldn’t choose one based upon the opinions of others so I combined the logos and added a green circle. I also changed the color scheme to be monochromatic rather than the complimentary I was going for a first.
5. I created my letterhead and business card.
8. I made sure to follow the rule of alignment and repetition.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I had Robert Wagner make some recommendations to my design. He recommended making my business cards easier to see.  I first wanted the cards to be green with the writing, but it was suggested to not. It made it too hard to see easily.

Facebook Critiques: Robert Wagner
Instructor Critique: It was recommended that I get rid of the green and since people associate piano with black and white, have that be my color scheme. I added a little green to add additional contrast to the black and white. He also reminded me about needing to save room for margins on the edges. Also recommended using the smooth tooth to soften and correct the edges of my treble clef. Also he suggested to have a piano key motiff in the background of my business card. I liked each of his suggestions and did each one.

MESSAGE

AUDIENCE
Anyone in Kent, Washington looking for a quality piano teacher.

TOP THING LEARNED

Montage Project

rebekahralph-6amontage-train

DESCRIPTION
Design a spiritual poster montage using the blend of images and type.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
I knew I wanted to use the Footprints in the sand poem and a picture with one set of footprints in the sand. It is one of my favorite poems. I found the picture online after searching for free images. Then I found 2 additional images on LDS.org in the free image library there. I added the images and made masks over them and blended them with the sand background. I blended the whole image of Christ and then brought into focus the lamb representing being carried by the Savior. I wanted that emphasized. In the second image I blended the Savior and then brought him slightly back into focus. I worked different techniques for the font until I found one that I liked. I beveled, embossed, stroked and drop shadowed the title and overlaid the quote on the image.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I had two people comment on my project. The first suggested that I should use an different image. I appreciated the thought but the images are important to me and I decided to keep them. The second person recommended that I flip the images since they were facing away from the footprints. It didn’t lead the eye.  I didn’t completely follow his suggestions since the instructor told me a different way to fix the problem, but I did address his suggestions. The instructor suggested to have the quote be smaller and have it be overlaid. I did both. Also he suggested to reverse the images so they would be looking at the footprints guiding the eye. I did all of his suggestions and I like the results. I made some recommendations Robert Wagner to remove the green by blending a little more around his picture. I also recommended to Ryan Hafen that the font was slightly difficult to read. Darkening the background or adding a drop shadow would improve that.

Photoshop Design Project

5a-photodesign-project

DESCRIPTION
By using photography and design skills, create a project that encompasses a consistent color scheme from the image.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
The steps that I followed in my process were:

  1. I knew I wanted to have an orchid in my design. My mother has white and purple ones. I didn’t think that white would give me good color scheme, so I decided to use the purple one. It became my color scheme. Originally I wanted to do a green monochromatic color scheme but I didn’t want green orchids and there wasn’t much green in the image. So I went with purple.
  2. I edited my photo to change the color of the orchid to a richer purple and changed the background to a lighter variation of the purple. I put the photo on the doc in Photoshop and added a small design in the bottom left corner and a large rectangle down the right side with the phrase and the color scheme. I tried to make sure I did a good good on aligning things correctly.

CRITIQUE PROCESS

I didn’t have anyone comment on my work. I was able to make some suggestions for fellow classmates work, but got no response.

The instructor did give me some suggestions which I applied. First was to fix the white spots on the orchid petals that was really distracting. Thankfully Google answered the question of how to fix it. This class has been my first exposure to Photoshop. Still learning the basics. The second suggestion was to make the font a smaller size. Third suggestion was to have the smaller font come closer together. It needed better proximity so it looked like the belonged as a phrase rather than 3 separate lines.

MESSAGE

TOP THING LEARNED
That colors are different when printed and how amazing Photoshop is as a photography tool.

I don’t own a fancy camera, so I borrowed one from a friend. I looked up online how to use the Nikon 5000 that I was using. It seemed like a nice camera. Only problem was that the battery ran out quickly and I didn’t get the charger. I took images at my house. I took the piano one there. (I still have my Christmas ornaments out.) Then when to my parents house. They have a bigger yard and a dog. I learned about focusing correctly especially the sky shots. The dog is in the Lead Room pictures. Taking these pictures made me want to get a nice camera and learn how to take excellent photos.

I enjoyed using the PhotoShop. I had never used it before. I liked seeing all the amazing things that can be done with this program. I often would complain how none vibrant and boring my point and shoot camera pictures were. It is nice that we have such a great tool to use. It also makes me wants to take lots of photos to see if I can make them any better. I plan on eventually taking a photography class at the local rec. center to improve my skills in this area.

Instruments of the Orchestra

DESCRIPTION
Create an instructional presentation using the Prezi software to demonstrate it’s features and capabilities.

PROCESS (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
I hadn’t ever used Prezi before. So I watched all the videos and got some ideas on how to make it work. I knew I wanted to do musical instruments in an orchestra. I know a lot about music. So I found a background with a curtain and created the background of the presentation with the instruments and then I wrote the information about each instrument and created a frame for each instrument and had an ending slide showing the whole orchestra. I may have more than 15 slides, due to the fact that there are more than 15 instruments in the orchestra and on my created background. I also found YouTube videos of each instrument and included it in the frame. I wanted to have music playing, but thought that it would be very choppy with all of the YouTube videos.

CRITIQUE PROCESS
I looked at Erin Smith’s Prezi on Facebook and she reviewed mine. She recommended not have so many clicks, which I changed. She also recommended to cut down on my slides and only do one instrument family, but I really wanted all instruments I felt it wouldn’t be complete without them.

Facebook Critiques: Erin Smith
Instructor Critique: It was recommended that I change the heading font to a serif and have all my blocks be the same. There was also a matter of distinguishing the different instrument families by color blocks as well as making the blocks be the same size. I changed it up a little by only having the title be different colors determined by their family. I also made the blocks the same size.

MESSAGE
Which instruments are in the individual families in the orchestra?

AUDIENCE
Anyone interested in learning more about musical instruments.

TOP THING LEARNED
Prezi was frustrating but once I figured out about how it doesn’t line up with the grid, then I liked it. I hope to use this program more in the future.
